What to Do When an Employee Discloses a Mental Illness

An estimated 26 percent of Americans ages 18 and older, or about one in four adults, suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Even though they are common, there is still a stigma associated with having a mental illness, which can carry over in to the workplace.

In this episode of Health Matters at Work video podcast series, our host Jerry Franz brings together Lea Ann Browning McNee of the Mental Health Association of Maryland and Erin Patton from SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) to discuss:

  • Warning signs a supervisor might recognize if an employee is struggling from a mental illness
  • Best practices for employers and supervisors to address mental health issues in the workplace
  • Resources available to HR professionals and supervisors that can help address mental health issues in a way that is beneficial for both the employer and the employee
